Julia Wlodkowski (Gdynia/Poland, 1980) is a photographer living and working in Antwerp, Belgium. Graduating from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Antwerp in 2003 with a master’s degree in photography, she went on to complete a further master’s in graphic design at Sint Lucas, Antwerp graduating in 2005.

Wlodkowski’s photographic work invites the viewer into a surreal world where the metamorphosis of ordinary, every-day and domestic objects are distorted to reveal something both surprising and disturbing. Objects and materials are transformed both manually and digitally into fully developed characters with human features – exploring and questioning the fine lines between human identity, common beauty standards, ‘human’ and something entirely ‘non-human’.

The candy-like colours and humorous, inviting scenery entice the viewer to come closer whilst distracting from the disturbing nature of the image; forcing the viewer to feel both a sense of familiarity and alienation from the work.
